Etched boxes

Etched boxes

These boxes are fabricated from sheet. Each design was created by computer and I transferred it to the silver sheet coated with photoresist. This was then developed and the unmasked areas etched away using nitric acid. The box was then formed from the etched material. Each box is about 4.5 cm in diameter.

I made one box for each member of my family - there's another one somewhere! They are all different, but contain common design elements. All have a 'J' in the design as we all share that as the first initial of our names.

Truncated cone raised box

Raised box

This box was raised from a disk of silver. Once the conical shape was developed, the top and base soldered on. The side was then slit to form the lid and a hinge and inner lip added. The box is about 8 cm diameter at the base. Having a hinge means the lid only needs to fit one way!

Plain cylindrical box

Plain box

This box is one of a pair. I took the easy route here and bought silver tube to form the box. It is about 5 cm in diameter. Polishing is more demanding here. Note this box was assayed in 2000 and has the millenium mark in addition to the standard marks.

Half round box

Half round box

Half round boxes have the advantage that the lid only has to fit one way. This box was fabricated from sheet and is 7 cm wide.
